WOODBRIDGE — (Press release)  The Prince William County Solid Waste Division will host its annual Compost Awareness Day Event on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at the Sean T. Connaughton Community Plaza, located at 1 County Complex Court in Woodbridge.

The event supports International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW), the largest most comprehensive education initiative of the compost industry.  ICAW promotes composting efforts in the back yard and at large scale commercial composting facilities, like the county’s Balls Ford Road Compost Facility, which is undergoing construction.


Prince William

The Prince William Committee of 100 is taking another look at the Rural Crescent, a swath of land from Quantico Marine Corps Base to Manassas Battlefield National Park eyed for rural preservation.

The meeting will be held Friday, April 19. A social will be held at 6:30 p.m. and dinner is at 7 o’clock.

STAFFORD — (Press release) The Stafford County Board of Supervisors identified healthy growth as a priority last fall when they adopted Stafford’s first-ever Strategic Plan and Stafford County 2040 Vision for the Future.

The Strategic Plan calls for actionable steps over the next three years to identify and execute growth management strategies that align with Stafford’s Comprehensive Plan without negatively impacting taxation. Citizen input is a critical element in the deliberations. Roundtable discussions and public meetings are the next steps in Stafford’s healthy growth analysis.

WOODBRIDGE — (Press release) Rain has postponed Monday night’s series opener between the Potomac Nationals (3-1) and the Carolina Mudcats (2-2) at Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium.

Monday night’s game vs. Carolina will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 8th at Northwest Federal Field, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 5:00pm.

MANASSAS — The project on which we first reported last year, to put bike racks and lockers at the Manassas Virginia Railway Express Station, is underway.

A new awning is also being installed as part of the $50,000 grant project, funded with toll monies collected on Interstate 66 inside the Capital Beltway.


Traffic

ALEXANDRIA — (Press release) Interstate 395 South will be reduced to one lane during overnight hours on Monday Friday, April 8 5 and Tuesday Saturday, April 9 6 between Duke Street (Exit 3) and Edsall Road (Exit 2). Periodic traffic stoppages of up to 30 minutes will occur Saturday, April 6 until early Sunday, April 7, from Midnight to 5 a.m.

These closures are needed for crews to install an overhead sign structure as part of the I-395 Express Lanes Northern Extension Project. Work is weather dependent.

STAFFORD — A woman who last week was allegedly found naked in a daycare and then arrested is also now charged in a separate incident that occurred inside a gas station bathroom.

A woman was arrested on Friday by deputies with the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office after assaulting a man while in a bathroom stall at Wawa.


Traffic

A series of disabled cars on Interstate 95 north in Stafford County led to a temporary closure of the highway on Thursday, said Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Brent Coffey.

The Virginia Department of Transportation reported the crash about 5:43 p.m. The saving grace — the temporary closure was of the northbound lanes, which didn’t affect drivers commuting south and heading home from work.


NOKESVILLE — (Press release) At approximately 6:26 pm, an officer conducted a traffic stop in the area of Aden Road and Misty Creek Court in Nokesville for a traffic violation.

During the investigation, the driver fled on foot, and it was determined the suspect had a warrant. With the assistance of a police K9 and a Fairfax helicopter, the suspect was taken into custody without incident in the 14400 block of Fleetwood Drive, at approximately 7:37 pm.
