Merlyn, the fourth of five children born to the late Ada Williams Broaddus and Merle Hubert Broaddus, was born on March 3, 1940, in Luray, Virginia, where her formative years were spent and her relationship with God began when she united with the Bethel Baptist Church at an early age. She attended the Andrew Jackson Consolidated School until 1957, when the family relocated to Washington, DC where she graduated with honors from McKinley
