Pipes Rust, Dip Forms on Furnace Road Closing it for Next 30 Days

You can blame two pipes below Furnace Road in North Stafford for closing the thoroughfare that links busy Garrisonville Road with three public schools: Garrisonville and Rockhill elementary schools, and A.G. Wright Middle School.

Here’s more in a press release from VDOT:

Motorists should follow the signs to use Joshua Road to reach their destination. Signs have been posted along the detour route.

Two 60-inch corrugated metal drainage pipes underneath Furnace Road have deteriorated and rusted away at the base, causing the pipes to sink into the soil. A dip has formed in the road’s travel surface over the pipes.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews have installed road closure signs at Furnace Road. Message boards have been posted along Garrisonville Road and Choptank Road to warn motorists of the road closure.

Emergency repair plans are underway to remove and replace the pipes, but the road is expected to remain closed for approximately 30 days.

Furnace Road also provides an important link between Garrisonville Road and Stafford’s Vista Woods neighborhood.
