Prince William & Manassas’ Best Kept — Waterways

The summer temperatures are soaring and what better way to stay cool than exploring the rivers, lakes and streams that traverse Prince William and Manassas.

Get a rare glimpse into Historic Occoquan with a guided kayak tour led by town Mayor Earnie Porta. The tours are offered the second and fourth Saturdays of the month through October and leave from Occoquan Regional Park.

“I started doing them…at the request of the manager of Occoquan Regional Park,” Porta said. “He knew I kayaked on the river, gave historic walking tours of the town and that I was looking for ways, as Mayor of Occoquan, to encourage more use of waterfront areas.”

During the hour-long tour, Porta said he brings kayakers up to the footbridge at the northwestern end of the town then loops back to the park. Along the way, Porta said he discusses everything from the history of the river and the town to the river-related industries and events that helped shape the town over the centuries.

Another way people can experience the Occoquan River is aboard a Miss Rivershore boat cruise. While on the 50’ pontoon boat, people can enjoy a lively history lesson from Captain Mark Perry, a cold soda and local wildlife. The cruises, which are available on weekends, are perfect for individuals and groups alike.

The Occoquan River isn’t the only body of water open for recreation. At Locust Shade Park, people can rent pedal boats on weekends to explore the eight-acre pond. The pond is also a great fishing hot-spot, filled with trout, largemouth bass and crappie.

People can also fish along the stunning shores of the Potomac River at Leesylvania State Park. Situated on a peninsula, this hidden gem hosts kid’s fishing tournaments throughout the summers and is an excellent place to catch perch, largemouth bass or catfish. Leesylvania is also a great place to launch kayaks, canoes and boats. From Leesylvania, hoist the sails and venture down the river to Tim’s Rivershore & Restaurant and Crabhouse for a lazy afternoon at the restaurant’s waterfront tiki bar.
