WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Chemicals used in a fire suppression device inside a kitchen at Saunders Middle School left one employee sick and after school activities canceled Wednesday.
School administrators held a planned fire drill at 1:30 p.m. and staff and students had all safely made it outside the building. But during the drill, a fire suppression system was accidentally activated inside of the cafeteria kitchen and an employee had a reaction to the fire suppressant substance, said Prince William schools spokeswoman Irene Cromer.
Fire and rescue crews were called to the school to evaluate the employee, and since crews were still on scene when school dismissed, the schoolâs principal canceled afterschool activities, said Cromer.
However, a concussion training was still held at the building at 7 p.m. as planned because fire and rescue crews had cleared the building by that time. The condition of the school employee was not released.
