Nellie May Thornton was born on October 23, 1916 in Loudoun County, VA in an area known as Conklin Village to Thomas Harold Dean and Mary Susan (Brooks) Dean. She had three siblings Theodore “Doc” Dean, Rhoda Dean, and Arthur Dean. Although Nellie was the oldest child, her siblings preceded her in death.
