Eight displaced after accidental kitchen fire in Woodbridge home

A house fire displaced eight people Sunday evening in Woodbridge after an accidental stove activation sparked a blaze in the kitchen.

Fire crews were called to the 4200 block of Gustus Drive in Dale City about 6:30 p.m. and arrived to find an active fire in a single-family home’s kitchen. All five adults and three children inside had safely evacuated, thanks to working smoke detectors, according to a release from Prince William County Fire and Rescue.

The fire caused moderate damage, and the home was deemed unsafe to occupy. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents. Investigators determined that the fire started when the stove was accidentally turned on, igniting nearby combustibles.

Officials are using the incident as a reminder of the importance of smoke detectors. “There is no better way to protect you and your family from fire than to have your home equipped with working smoke detectors,” the department said.
