Fredericksburg Just Rolled Out Its 20-Year Vision—Here’s What’s Inside

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The folks at City Hall just told Potomac Local News they’ve officially adopted Fredericksburg Forward—a big-picture plan that lays out how the city will grow, preserve its history, and improve quality of life over the next two decades.

After 18 months of neighborhood meetups, pop-up events, online surveys, and public hearings, the updated Comprehensive Plan got the green light from City Council on June 24. It covers everything from housing and transportation to historic preservation and environmental stewardship—basically, the blueprint for Fredericksburg’s future.

City leaders say Fredericksburg Forward is built on the priorities residents shared during the process—so if you spoke up at a meeting or filled out a survey, you might see your ideas in action.

News Release: City of Fredericksburg Releases Updated Comprehensive Plan: Fredericksburg Forward

(Fredericksburg, VA) August 7, 2025 – The City of Fredericksburg is pleased to announce the adoption and publication of its updated Comprehensive Plan,

Fredericksburg Forward, which was officially adopted by City Council on June 24, 2025. The Plan reflects the community’s vision for Fredericksburg’s future and serves as the City’s primary policy guide for planning and development over the next 20 years.

Over the past 18 months, the City’s Community Planning and Building Department, along with the Planning Commission and consultants Summit Design and Engineering and Stantec, worked closely with residents, stakeholders, and advisory groups to develop the updated plan through a robust community engagement process. This included pop-up events, neighborhood meetings, stakeholder focus groups, commissions and committee discussions, three citywide community meetings, an online survey and comment map, and a Comprehensive Plan Ambassador email campaign.
