During the December 3, 2024, Dumfries Town Council meeting, frustrations surfaced over zoning challenges that have delayed the approval of a new banquet hall. Local business owners and council members called for greater clarity and consistency in the town’s zoning processes, citing delays caused by undefined regulations.
Maria Aguilera, an entrepreneur, expressed her concerns during the public hearing. “We applied to get an occupancy permit to have a banquet hall at 7650 Possum Point Drive, which was not denied, not approved, because the definition was not included,” Aguilera said. “We believe it’s a good opportunity for the community to have a place to celebrate their birthdays, weddings, and any celebration.”
Property owner Jurgen van Dijk, echoed the frustrations. “We’ve had event space for quite a long time, as you guys all know. And this whole thing that’s been happening with the definition has been held up. Our applicant for the new event space, which seems kind of unfair because FB01 is already for event space,” van Dijk said.
Vice Mayor Monae Monae Nickerson voiced concerns about inconsistent zoning interpretations that have left business owners in limbo. “Why is this changing what’s happening now? It seems like we’re freezing everyone while we figure this out,” she said.
Mayor Derek Wood shared similar frustrations, emphasizing the need for a streamlined process. “We told everybody, hey, Dumfries is open for business. The process is simple. It’s easy. Come on and do business in Dumfries,” Wood said. “And now, instead of us approving this, she just missed Thanksgiving and now this Christmas season to be able to do a whole lot of things.”
The council ultimately approved the addition of a definition for cultural arts and entertainment in the zoning code. The new definition is expected to help streamline future applications and provide clarity for business owners.
Despite the approval, council members recognized the need for broader reforms. “We’re going through some growing pains,” said Councilman Tyrone Brown. “Is there any way that we can prioritize making sure that this business gets the priority attention that it needs so that they can be opened?”
