The City of Manassas School Board seeks rising juniors and seniors interested in becoming Student representatives for the School Board. Students must apply online before April 17, 2023.
The Board will select two students to serve a year-long term and be a voice for all Manassas City Public School students.
Student Representatives serve in a non-voting capacity on the school board. They help give students perspective when it’s time for them to take action on an issue that impacts them.
They are also to prepare for the meetings by studying the agenda, providing input if applicable, and sharing information regarding what’s happening in their building or other schools, if aware of any.
The Student Representatives were added to the School Board in 2013 by a former superintendent and member of the School Board.
The process began with a public discussion inviting students to serve in May 2013. Policy and regulations were established, students applied, and were approved to serve in June 2013.
The first representatives, Anna Spall and Andrew Done, officially began their terms in July 2013.
The goal of the Student Representative program is to allow students to formally share their feedback with the Board. Also, allowing students an opportunity to interact and gain an understanding of the work that goes into governing a school division.
Overall there have been roughly 20 students who have served over the 10-year period. Juniors in the position can apply again to be re-elected their senior year.
The Student Representatives must attend the regular School Board meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.
Meetings were originally held at City Hall, 9027 Center Street, Manassas, 20110. Due to City Hall renovations, they have since moved to Jennie Dean Elementary School, 9601 Prince William Street 20110, as of May 2022.
Meetings will resume at City Hall once all renovations are complete later this year.
The Manassas School Board was among the first in the area to participate in the Student Representative program.
