Dumfries officials laid the groundwork for the region's first gun buyback program.
The Town Council, on Tuesday, July 5, approved an ordinance that allows the town to create a program where anyone may bring unwanted guns to a buyback event to surrender the weapon for cash. The town's small contingent of police officers will manage the program, and it's unclear what will happen to the firearms they collect.
