Prince William County's new police chief, Peter Newsham, was sworn into office in a small, unpublicized ceremony on Monday, February 1.
Newsham comes from Washington, D.C., where he served as police chief through the end of 2020. He worked for the Metropolitan Police Department for 31 years before taking the top-cop-job in Prince William County, replacing former Chief Barry Barnard, who retired on July 1, 2020.
Newsham addressed the Board of County Supervisors, the governing body that three months ago voted to hire Newsham. He praised the people who had worked in his position before him (Newsham is the department's fifth police chief since the department was founded in 1970).
