Scammer claims to call from Manassas City Government

Someone is posing a Manassas City employee in an attempt to swindle cash from unsuspecting victims.

Manassas police tell us that on Friday, December 18, 2020 at approximately 5:54 p.m., were called to the 10200 block of Butternut Circle for report of a fraud.

The victim was contacted by an unknown person claiming to be with Social Security Administration, who advised that the victim needed to send money.

The victim was suspicious of the caller and demanded to talk to a representative from a local agency. The victim then advised that he received a second call with a caller I.D. from the City of Manassas. The victim was then asked to send money to an out of state address. The investigation is ongoing.

Police issued a statement about this crime.
