How accessible and inclusive recreation facilities serve you better

What does it mean to have an accessible and inclusive recreational facility near you?

A lot of us may not think too much about being able to physically enter a local park, pool, or gym. However, many individuals have a harder time finding local amenities that fit their needs.

Being accessible is different from being inclusive

An accessible facility is easily reached or entered by wheelchairs, walkers, or crutches with the help of ramps, handrails, and other mobility-aiding methods. An inclusive facility is one that goes beyond just being easily accessed by the public. Inclusive facilities offer programs that make all individuals feel welcome and allow the same level of engagement for everyone.

At the Manassas Park Community Center, we’re proud to offer a variety of programs designed to meet the needs of individuals with all levels of ability.

The Manassas Park Buddy Club is an adult social group that suits the needs of individuals with developmental and/or cognitive disabilities.

It includes daily activities, such as

  • Fitness classes
  • Arts and crafts
  • Movie days, and more

Many of our Buddy Club members also participate in our Take One Drama Troupe, which puts on performances twice a year, with a play in the fall and a variety show in spring. If you’d like more information about our Buddy Club or Take One Drama Troupe, contact Tony Thomas at [email protected].

Sarah Barnett, Operations/Aquatics Supervisor, explained how the Aquatics Division provides accessible facilities, “Our pool at the Community Center as well as Signal Bay Waterpark are equipped with zero-depth entry points and handrails. Our pool also comes equipped with a lift that makes transitioning from a wheelchair a breeze. Guests can request it to enter the pool and the hot tub!”

“I designed our Adaptive Aquatics course around times when our pool is the quietest to give children the benefit of a peaceful environment. Through its time, it’s become more available to other populations and continues to be a great program for individuals with disabilities wanting to learn water safety,” Barnett added.
