On shore and by boat, Occoquan River clean up nets 2 tons of garbage

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — Volunteers fanned out Saturday to clean up the region’s waterways.

The annual Friends of the Occoquan Spring Clean Up drew 229 volunteers, who came to pick up trash along the Occoquan River & Reservoir at the Bull Run, Fountainhead, Occoquan Regional Park, parks and marinas in Lake Ridge, and the Town of Occoquan.

Making up the volunteers were parents and their children, as well as students from

  • Lake Ridge Middle
  • Woodbridge Senior High School
  • Osbourn High School near Manassas

Also on the volunteer list, Boy Scout Troops 1352 and Pack 295, Girl Scout Troop 2016 and JR ROTC cadets, NOVA GO with kayaks, Bull Run Rotary, Optimist and Ambassador Clubs, SEV1Tech company with 31 employees, Young Professionals and Sea Scout Ship 791.

The all combed the shores and went out by boat to retrieve trash that had accumulated over the winter months. Harry Wiggins and Glenn Richman, both of Lake Ridge, helped out by bringing truckloads of filled trash and recyclable bags from the shorelines to the Marina.

Since the Occoquan Reservoir is the source of Northern Virginia’s drinking water, Mike Nardolilli, Chairman of NOVA Parks and Friends of the Occoquan (FOTO) said they are grateful for all the volunteers who spent their weekend relieving the Occoquan of two tons of trash.
