STAFFORD COUNTY — The Thanksgiving holiday weekend turned deadly on the roads after two people died in a crash on Route 1.
The wreck occurred in the 3700 block of Jefferson Davis Highway, just north of Garrisonville Road at 11:06 a.m. when a 2002 Nissan Xterra that was traveling north on Route 1 when it crossed the center line and struck a southbound 1993 Jeep Cherokee. The Nissan was then struck by a northbound 2018 Ford Super Duty truck, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.
The crash is under investigation, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.
The incident forced the closure of Route 1 in both directions. Traffic on Interstate 95, which runs parallel to Route 1, became snarled on what is already one of the busiest travel days of the year. The roadway reopened about 4 p.m. Wednesday.
This the third fatal crash on Stafford County roads this month.
