Computer fraud investigated in Stafford

STAFFORD — Potomac Local has received the following crime reports from the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office:

LARCENIES

Chestnut Lane, 10/24. Halloween decorations stolen from yard on 10/21 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The investigation is ongoing.

Wawa, 830 Warrenton Road, 10/24. Three female subjects leave the store without paying for sandwiches and a drink. The investigation is ongoing.

FRAUD

400 block of Abberly Drive, 10/24, 10:00 a.m. Victim reports computer scam. Victim contacted number advertised on screen that popped up claiming to be “Word Support” for help with computer problems in mid-September. She later called the number again to request a refund and a subject, who identified himself as “Steve”, directed her to a website that appeared to give him one-time access to her bank account. He told her he accidentally transferred $3000.00 instead of $300.00. He told the victim to make up the difference by buying several thousand dollars in gift cards and providing him with the gift card numbers. Steve told her the gift cards were not going through, so advised her to buy another $2500.00 in gift cards, and her card was declined when trying to purchase them. At this point, the victim realized she was involved in a scam. The investigation is ongoing.

DRUGS

Banks Ford Parkway, 10/24. Vehicle accident yields drug arrest. Driver of one of the vehicles in the accident received a summons for possession of marijuana.
