DUMFRIES — Derrick Wood will be the next Dumfries mayor.
He beat his opponent Cliff Brewer by more than 46 points in Tuesday’s town election. Wood will replace Mayor Gerald Foreman who did not seek re-election after serving two terms as mayor, as well as a term on the town council before he was elected Mayor in 2012.
Wood has sat on the Dumfries Town Council alongside Brewer since 2012.
In addition, the mayor’s seat, three Dumfries Town Council seats were up for grabs. They were filled by newcomers Selonia Miles, Monae Nickerson, and Cyndy Neville.
Neville is no stranger to the town government after working as the town’s community services coordinator. She resigned from the job four years ago and mounted an unsuccessful bid for town council.
Brenda Via will not return to the town council after losing her re-election bid. The new council will take their seats July 1.
Occoquan
In the tiny riverside town of Occoquan, Earnie Porta is mayor once again, winning his race against Steven Vonderheide by 58 points with 216 votes cast.
Current Mayor Elizabeth Quist did not seek reelection.
Porto returns to the Town Council where he served multiple terms as mayor before stepping down and mounting an unsuccessful campaign for the Occoquan District Supervisors seat on the Prince William County Board of Supervisors now held by Ruth Anderson.
There were five town council seats open in addition the Occoquan Mayor’s seat, with eight candidates looking to fill them. Here’s who won:

Quantico
Mayor Kevin Brown keeps his seat in Quantico, defeating his opponent and one-time council member Peggy Alexander by nearly 24 points.

Councilmember Jerre Thomas was killed on April 12, 2018, while riding his motorcycle on Interstate 95 near Dumfries. He was on today’s ballot and received 43 votes, 11 percent of the vote.
Haymarket
Mayor David Leake ran unopposed and will keep his seat.
