Stafford wants to know: How do you like your new schools superintendent?

STAFFORD — What do you want in a new schools superintendent?

Residents are invited to fill out an online survey from Stafford County Public Schools with questions about the characteristics they want to see in the school division’s next leader. The survey asks if the superintendent should be involved in teacher recruitment, setting the division’s school curriculum, or be focused on the finances of the school district.

Many of the questions in the survey are redundant and list general obligations of many state school superintendents. The survey will remain online through May 11.

It comes as the school division begins its search for a new chief following the resignation of Dr. Bruce Benson last month. He’ll head to a new superintendents job at a North Carolina public school system at the close of this school year.

ECRA Group has been retained by the school division to conduct a nationwide search for a new superintendent. The firm is also conducting superintendent searches for school systems in New York., New Jersey, Florida, and California.

Benson held the position for five years and had his contract extended through 2019. Stafford school officials said they’re looking for someone who wants to make a “long-term commitment” to the division.

In the county to the north, Dr. Steven Walts is in his 18th year as Prince William County Schools Superintendent.
