QUANTICO — Quantico Town Councilman Jerre Thomas II was killed on Thursday while riding his motorcycle on Interstate 95.
Police said Thomas collided with a Honda Civic that was changing lanes near Dumfries.
Here’s the police report:
Around 8:15 a.m. yesterday (April 12, 2018), Virginia State Police was called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash in Prince William County.
A 2006 Yamaha XV1900CT motorcycle was traveling northbound in the left-hand lane of Interstate 95 near mile marker 151 when a 2012 Honda Civic changed lanes, striking the motorcycle on its right side. The impact of the collision caused the motorcycle to briefly leave the roadway. The driver – Jerre S. Thomas II, 57, of Quantico, Va. – attempted to regain control, causing the motorcycle to re-enter the left travel lane where it fell onto its side ejecting the driver.
Thomas was transported to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He later succumbed to those injuries at the hospital.
The sedan driver — a 47-year-old male — was uninjured.
Virginia State Police is consulting with the Commonwealth Attorney regarding charges. The crash remains under investigation.
Quantico Mayor Kevin Brown posted this statement:
Everyone who met Jerre quickly knew three things…he loved his family, he loved the Marine Corps and he loved the Town of Quantico.
We will all miss his energetic spirit, his contagious smile and his desire to serve his county and community.
Jerre retired from the Marine Corps with the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant.
Thomas was in the process of finishing his first term on town council, and he is on the ballot for an upcoming May 1 election. Brown said his name will remain on the ballot, though a Special Election could be held to fill his seat after the May 1 election.
