A new name for a new park in Haymarket

HAYMARKET, Va. — A new park in Haymarket has a new name.

The Town Council on November 9 voted unanimously to name a new park on the east side of town, located at 14710 Washington Street, Haymarket Community Park.

Town officials three months ago solicited names for a new five-acre park that will be built on the old Harrover property. Town staff received 1,200 votes on its website, social media pages, and via text message from residents who wanted a say on what the new recreation space should be called.

The final two names selected were Haymarket Community Park and Harrover Park. “Haymarket Community Park” won the contest by 36 votes.

The park will take 10 years and $2.1 million to build in three phases. It will include a pavilion, playground, and walking trails.

The town’s police station used to sit on the Harrover property where the park will be built. When the police department relocated to Town Hall, located at 15000 Washington Street, a food pantry later opened at the site of the old police station.
