Ph.D. candidates studying at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government partnered with Habitat for Humanity Prince William County and the Prince William County Department of Public Works last weekend. The students are members of the Association for Public Policy Ph.D. Students (APPS) group.

You know you’re one of them when the concept of free time scares you.
On Friday, September 9, and in their spare time, the APPS group cleared vegetation on a 1.5 acre, vacant, County-owned parcel near the Brighton Commons condominiums in Manassas.
The students cut back limbs and branches on cedar trees and overgrown scrub brush. They removed litter and debris from the site. And, they installed a “no loitering, no dumpingâ sign to discourage unwanted activity in the area.

All kidding aside, we hope the group found their work with Habitat to be a much-needed break from the rigors of their studies. Student members included Katrina Dunlap, Hong Zhang, Angie Gill, Josh Lee, Mo Ogutimein, Kirk Heffelmire and Simi Fasehun. And, we’re hugely grateful for the time they took from their busy schedules to help us out on our Community Development project.
Habitat for Humanity Prince William County regularly partners with the Prince William County Public Works Department in its Community Development work. Tim Hughes, an Engineering Assistant with Prince William Countyâs Environmental Services Division, coordinates the work sites with Habitat.
Community Development projects are part of Habitat for Humanityâs Neighborhood Revitalization program (NR). The NR program engages the residents of neighborhoods and other community partners to revive neighborhoods and make them safe, inviting places to live. Community development projects impact many residents. They improve the health and well-being of residents by revitalizing public areas, removing blight, improving water quality and generally giving residents improved access to public areas and a better sense of well-being and safety.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced significant highway changes and closures to support the Virginia State Police during the upcoming Presidential Inauguration of Donald Trump. Drivers traveling from Virginia into Washington, D.C., on Monday, January 20, are urged to plan ahead and use alternate routes as multiple bridges and ramps will be closed. Portable and overhead message signs will provide reminders of the closures.
The closures will begin at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, January 20, and remain in effect until the conclusion of inaugural events. Hereâs what drivers need to know:
Prince William Times â For Heather Payne and her family, paying their annual car tax bill has been difficult. Together, she and her husband owe about $600 a year on two older cars, one of which is a 2014 model.
The Paynes have five children, and theyâve struggled since the pandemic. Payne said her husband was laid off from his job in sales, and she has juggled up to four jobs at a time to pay the bills.
Now, Payne has two jobs but she and her husband are still behind on their car tax payments. In June, she was surprised when her wages were garnished to pay the bill.
The Center Square â Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares hosted a press conference Tuesday with other state leaders and advocacy groups supporting legislation that would only allow biological females to compete on womenâs sports teams in Virginia.
âVirginia will never roll back Title IX under the guise of false equity,â Miyares said. âLet us stand firmly with every girl and woman in Virginia to protect fairness, ensure safety, and uphold the opportunities they have earned.â
Women from the Roanoke College womenâs swim team were also in attendance, as a transgender student temporarily joined their team in 2023. So was Riley Gaines, the former University of Kentucky swimmer who became a voice for the Save Womenâs Sport movement after competing against transgender athlete Leah Thomas.Â
