Independence Day is no holiday for your pets.
The Prince William Police Department’s Animal Shelter usually fills up with animals after they are often found by animal control officers miles wandering miles away from their homes, exhausted, and dehydrated.
The animals often jump fences and break off leashes and leads.
Here’s how to prevent losing Fido, from Prince William police:
If your pet is upset by thunder or other loud noises, 4th of July fireworks can really stir its noise phobia. We recommend taking these precautions:
Your pets won’t enjoy the fireworks display, so leave them at home. Keep them inside, shielded from loud noises and high temperatures.
If loud noises upset your pets, do not leave them alone while you are out celebrating. Make sure someone can stay with them.
If you think your pets should be tranquilized, consult your veterinarian before the 4th.
Contact an animal behaviorist to work with your pets on their fears. With some positive reinforcement and behavior modification training, by Independence Day of 2017 you and your pet may enjoy freedom from worry!

After almost 40 years in practice, Manassas-based Internist John Cary, MD’s change to concierge medicine enabled focused attention for each individual, and the launch of his innovative diet program for those with type 2 diabetes. “The goal is to promote enough weight loss to reach an acceptable A1C of 6% with no medication,” he explains. “Achieving that can take several months of very close follow up. As I tell my patients, we are in this together.”
Jay Tyroler, MD considers his patients quite literally as family. “I believe there’s nothing more honorable than helping patients when they’re sick, or scared, or feeling vulnerable, and I care for them exactly as I would my loved ones.” Whether for a specialist referral, urgent health issue or ongoing follow up, “My patients know I’m always just a phone call away.”
