Hurricane Joaquin appears not to be a major threat to our region. A new storm track from the National Hurricane Center shows the storm remaining off shore.
Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015
2 p.m.
Hurricane Joaquin is now a category four storm with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. This storm is now considered “extremely dangerous” by the National Hurricane Center.
1:30 p.m.
A United Way yard sale scheduled Saturday at the Stafford County Government Center is canceled.
7:30 a.m.
Hurricane Joaquin strengthened overnight to become a major category three storm.
The National Hurricane Center released this latest storm advisory to the public at 5 a.m.

Manassas Park has sandbags for residents
Due to the anticipated rainfall expected in the coming days, the Department of Public Works is currently preparing sand bags for public distribution that will be available on October 1st. The sand bags will be available at the Public Works’ main building located at 331 Manassas Drive. Please call Public Works at 703.335.8840 with any questions or concerns.
6 p.m.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Joaquin. Heavy rain expected — totals of eight to 10 inches of rain expected in the state on Friday — and the coming hurricane prompted McAuliffe to issue the order.
