Funds raised at Potomac High School Community Day benefit family of late teacher

Students at Potomac Senior High School came together to host their annual Community Day event to benefit a late teacher.

A portion of the proceeds made during Community Day will go to the family of Potomac history teacher, Leonard Valko, 47, who passed away earlier this year from a heart attack.

Clubs, including VEX Robotics and African American History Club, set up tables set up during the event in Woodbridge.

Students and other attendees were able to try to dunk teachers as well as Potomac’s principal, Mr. Wright. Each dunk tank participant was submerged at least once. A few of the participating teachers offered extra credit points to students who were able to dunk them.

Attendees also had the opportunity to visit a petting zoo. A pony, two sheep, rabbits, and ducks were available to be pet. Many attendees were able to hold the ducks.

Clubs had activities set up throughout the event to raise funds. Never more than a dollar or two was charged to participate in the activities.

Attendees were able to test their tossing skills during a game of corn hole hosted by the sophomore class.

The African American History Club gave attendees the chance to test their knowledge on how well they know influential figures from the past to the present.

To raise funds, clubs also sold food to the attendees. The drama club offered homemade caramel apples to those with a sweet tooth.

To further satisfy those with a sweet tooth, an ice cream truck and funnel cake truck were serving the event as well. Some of the clubs offered pizza and sausage sandwiches along with chips and beverages.

Thanks to Potomac’s talented art department, henna tattoos were also offered during the event. Each henna tattoo was customizable; from intricate flower patterns to the Star Trek “Starfleet” insignia.
