Police are responding to several crashes on area roads today due to snow. The National Weather Service upgraded the winter weather advisory to a Winter Storm Warning in Prince William County. Public Schools in Prince William County remain open.

The winter storm warning for Prince William, Manassas, Manassas Park, and Fairfax County is in effect until 1 p.m. Here’s the latest from the National Weather Service:
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BALTIMORE MD/WASHINGTON HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR SNOW…WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 PM EST THIS AFTERNOON.
THE WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.
* PRECIPITATION TYPE…SNOW…HEAVY AT TIMES.
* ACCUMULATIONS…4 TO 6 INCHES.
* TIMING…UNTIL 1 PM. THE HEAVIEST SNOW WILL BE THROUGH 11 AM.
* TEMPERATURES…LOW 20S. * WINDS…VARIABLE 5 MPH.
* IMPACTS…HEAVY SNOW ACCUMULATING ON ALL SURFACES WELL BELOW FREEZING AND VISIBILITY BELOW HALF MILE WILL CONTINUE TO MAKE FOR VERY HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING.

Virginia State Police have also been called to several crashes across the region. The agency’s Northern Virginia headquarters is also opening late closed today, according to an agency spokeswoman:
The Virginia State Police Fairfax Division Headquarters located at 4977 Alliance Drive in Fairfax County will
open Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.As for crashes… As of 6:55 a.m., Virginia State Police are currently responding to 21 traffic crashes within the Northern Virginia region. The majority of those crashes only involve damage to vehicles and are concentrated on I-495 in Springfield and I-95 from the 159 mile marker to the 169 mile marker in Prince William County.
Those having to travel this morning are advised to slow down for road conditions; wear a seat belt; give yourself extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you so have time to safely react and brake if the opportunity arises; and don’t drive distracted so you can spot slick spots on the road and be alert to the other vehicles around you.
