The 11-vehicle crash that happened on I-95 North yesterday morning is still being investigated by the Virginia State Police. The crash took place at 11:03 a.m. at the 144-mile marker in Stafford.
The accident happened when a tractor-trailor braked suddenly and swerved to avoid traffic congestion ahead. The driver of the tractor-trailer attempted to avoid hitting vehicles, and when driving between the center and left lanes, he sideswiped 10 vehicles before stopping.
More from a Virginia State Police release:
A total of five individuals in four of the 10 vehicles are transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Antolin Francia, 61, of Miami, Fla., was not injured. He was charged with reckless driving.
Northbound lanes of I-95 were re-opened by 1:44 p.m.
