Furnace Road Project To Be Completed February 24

After a failure of two drainage pipes, Furnace Road was closed in the beginning of February, rerouting residents to Joshua Road while VDOT has been underway, making repairs.

According to Kelly Hannon, Communications Manager for VDOT, progress is being made on repairing the pipes, and making Furnace Road passable for drivers.

“This project has been declared an emergency, which allowed us to procure materials and equipment more rapidly than with a standard project. We are replacing the old pipes, made of corrugated metal, with plastic pipes,” Hannon said of the quick response to the road damage.

The goal is for the project to be completed by February 24.

“A contractor has been at the scene making repairs since Saturday, February 8, and continues to work over weekends. We shared the initial 30-day estimate to give the public an immediate sense of the repair schedule on the day of the closure decision. Now, with our ability to obtain materials and a contractor, we are working to open the road in half this time,” Hannon said.
