Trevor Blake, 11, Non-Profit Founder, Dies of Cancer

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — The 11-year-old who captured our attention during his fight with cancer died today.

Trevor Blake, of Woodbridge, founded Trevor’s Treasures as a non-profit organization to help others families who have children battling cancer.

Blake’s mother shared the news of her son’t death this morning on the family’s CaringBridge website:

My strong brave boy has received his wings. With dad, Mom, dad #2, and Grandma Blake by his side he has moved on to fulfill his mission of watching over all of us and all the other children faced with battling this awful disease.

He has won. He has inspired so many and will carry that inspiration on for eternity. So here we all are, its time to pull a Trevor. As upset as we are, it is time to move forward and carry on with the lessons he has taught us. Selflessness. I love you Trevor.

With all my heart. You are and will always be my strong brave boy.

Trevor’s battle with cancer was widely covered by area news organizations, and several area police and fire departments recognized the child as an honorary member.

As Trevor’s time neared an end, his mother continued to share her thoughts about the son she loved so much.

As I lay here with my strong brave boy, I have no idea what tomorrow holds. Or if there will even be a tomorrow.

But I do know that Trevor has fought hard. He is not losing this 6 year battle. He has won. He has rid himself of cancer numerous times and along the way he has helped so many.

Here he is, next to me. He is comfortable. I tell him over and over again how much I love him. How much we all love him.

And he will live on inside us all. I love you buddy. My strong brave boy. Everything will be ok.

Trevor suffered from a rare form of cancer, Neuroblastoma, according his mother:

After 2 months of the unknown, traveling from specialist to specialist Trevor was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma. His symptoms were leg pain and low grade fever, yes for two straight months. By the time he was diagnosed, the cancer, which started as a tumor on his adrenal gland, had spread into his bone and marrow, making it stage 4.

The news came as an absolute nightmare, but started our journey of what we know will cure Trevor’s cancer and mold the way for his long life as a man on a mission to help others in similar situations. Trevor’s hunger for knowledge and his caring spirit will carry him through so that he can help others that one day find out that they or their children have cancer.

There’s no word yet on funeral arrangements for Trevor.
