Driver’s Medical Issue Led to Dumfries Power Outage

DUMFRIES, Va. — A vehicle crash led to a power outage for about 4,800 Dominion Virginia Power customers today.

Dumfries police Chief Robert Forker said a 40-year-old woman, of Vienna, suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel while traveling south on U.S. 1 at Old Stage Coach Road. The woman was driving a 2010 Honda Odyssey, and during the crash it collided with the rear of a 2006 Dodge Ram pickup driven by a 42-year-old man of Nokesville about 10:50 a.m., said Forker.

The van left the roadway and struck a support cable for a utility pole belonging to Dominion Virginia Power. The pole then fell onto the van.

Power crews were called to the scene and determined it was safe for rescue crews to reach the driver and take her to a local hospital. The woman was later treated at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center for minor injuries, said Forker. The driver of the pickup was not injured.

Speed and alcohol are said not to be factors in the crash, and an investigation continues.

The collision left power customers in the dark for about an hour and a half after the crash, including students at two schools in Dumfries – Dumfries Elementary and Graham Park Middle schools.

This is the second crash in Prince William County less than a week involving a driver with a medical emergency. On Saturday, an 87-year-old man from Woodbridge died after his car ran off Dale Boulevard following a medical emergency.
