Fairfax County, Va. — When heavy winds kicked up snow in our area over the weekend blew into the area, a large highway sign also collapsed on Interstate 66.

Now officials with the Virginia Department of Transportation are looking into what caused the collapse.

The 30-foot tall sign at I-66 and Monument Avenue in Fairfax County collapsed Saturday about 2:50 p.m. About the same time, a large weather squall line stretching from Maryland to Woodbridge containing heavy snow blew across the region causing near-white out conditions for a brief time in some areas.

The fallen sign struck a pick-up but no one was injured.

Investigators have not said what caused the sign to fall, but said the probe into what happened will likely take several weeks.

“This is a very serious matter and I want to assure motorists and the public that VDOT will get to the bottom of what caused the collapse so we can prevent this from happening again,” said VDOT Commissioner Greg Whirley in an press release. “We will take the appropriate actions needed to assure the safety of our structures. I will oversee this investigation, including keeping the public informed.”
