DMV Customers Shun Paper Notices

RICHMOND – More than three-quarters of a million Virginians have signed up to receive notices from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) via email, text or phone message since the new, environmentally-friendly service was launched in August 2010.

“We’re well on our way to a million customers signing up for the most convenient and cheapest way to receive decal and license renewal alerts,” said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb. “We applaud these Virginians for helping to save the Commonwealth money and resources.”

The 750,000 customers who are no longer receiving paper reminders via U.S. mail will save the state $442,000. Each piece of U.S. mail not processed by DMV saves 59 cents in printing, processing and postage fees.

Customers sign up to receive electronic renewal notices for vehicle registrations (decals) and driver’s licenses by creating a myDMV account at www.dmvNOW.com/myDMV. Using a personal identification number (PIN), customers check a box indicating they want to receive decal renewal notices via email, phone or text message, and they can also manage their DMV records without visiting an office. More than 3.4 million customers have a DMV PIN.

Enhancements to the myDMV account feature were launched last month. Customers now see their account information consolidated on one page for quick reference. The securely accessed data includes email, residence, and mailing addresses; ID card and license status; safe driving points; vehicle information and decal expiration dates; and alerts for licenses or decals due for renewal. The streamlined myDMV account service may be accessed using a social security number in case the customer does not know his or her DMV customer number. More than 900,000 Virginians have established myDMV accounts since September 2010.

In addition to opting for automated renewal notices, customers can conduct a variety of secure online transactions with a myDMV account and PIN such as renewing driver’s licenses or ID cards, and they may obtain information specific to them, such as their driving records.
