Dumfries, Va. — Dumfries’ leaders say their town is attracting top defense contractors, and those companies need talented professionals to fill open jobs.
For the first time ever, Dumfries from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday will hold a Government Contractors / Technology Job Expo. The event, which will feature the U.S. Marine Corps, Aurora Flight Sciences and Chenega Corporation, will connect job seekers with these and other agencies.
“This is a great opportunity for the town to partner with the businesses to create more exposure, and it gives us the opportunity to tell the world we have these Fortune 500 companies right here in Dumfries,” said town economic development coordinator Debi Sandlin.
Calling the town a “hub zone,” Sandlin says Dumfries’ location just one mile north of the main entrance to Quantico Marine Corps Base makes it a perfect magnet for defense companies, many of which are attempting to recruit workers who have been commuting north to Washington.
In addition to the job fair, the event will also feature workshops about marketing yourself and preparing for an interview.
Just south of Dumfries, defense contractors have also flocked to North Stafford’s Quantico Corporate Center in recent years. Officials there say abundant office space and the lack of certain taxes helped to bring them to the county.
The latest round of BRAC brought more than 6,000 federal employees to Quantico, many of them to the new Russell-Knox Building in North Stafford.
