The East Coast was rocked again overnight by an earthquake from Virginia.
The 4.5 magnitude quake was once again centered near where Tuesday’s large 5.8 quake originated in Mineral, Va., just 32 miles southwest of Fredericksburg, according to the USGS.
This latest aftershock marks the fourth felt in the region since the larger earthquake, which sent people scrambling to call 911, people evacuating buildings and inspecting their home for damage.
No one was injured, but several buildings sustained damage during the quake including the Washington Monument and National Cathedral in Washington. Locally, Germanna Community College’s Stafford Center remains closed for the remainder of the week after the college’s Fredericksburg campus sustained heavy damage.
Also on Tuesday, the quake did cause some minor damage to some Prince William County Public Schools including Woodbridge High School. Officials say they are continuing to ready the buildings for school reopening next month.
A number of structural engineers continue to inspect facilities in PWCS. From building roofs to stadium bleachers and lighting poles… and everything in between, no significant structural damage has been found as a result of Tuesday’s earthquake. Some buildings did sustain superficial cosmetic blemishes that are being repaired but nothing to prevent occupancy in any School Division facility. Preparations continue for the opening of school on September 6.
