Fire also a Danger in College Dorms

Submitted by DTVFD Staff

Three hundred sixty five structure fires have caused over $9 million in loss and damages at colleges since 2000 in Virginia. If you’re staying in student housing, are you willing to bet your life that you are automatically safe from fire? Be smart; change the batteries in your smoke detectors when you get there.

Many student houses and dorms at your school might not have adequate automatic sprinklers or fire alarm systems. Regularly testing fire and smoke detectors is the first smart action you can take at any new location you move to.

Also learning how to use a fire extinguisher, always having two ways to escape, and knowing how to activate fire notification systems at your school can save your life and protect others.

Fires pollute our air with toxic fumes, consume millions of gallons of water, fill our landfills with unrecyclable trash, and kill nearly 3,700 people every year. So protect the earth and protect yourself.

As students return to colleges in Virginia, Dumfries-Triangle Volunteer Fire Deptartment wants to remind you that Gov. Robert F. McDonnell has recognized September as “Campus Fire Safety Month”. Ensure your safety beyond the college years by including vital fire safety education in your college plans.
