North Stafford — Virginia’s governor stopped in North Stafford on Thursday to stump for House of Delegates hopeful Mark Dudenhefer.

McDonnell touted the retired Marine’s leadership experience as well as his work as Chairman of the Stafford County Board of Supervisors.

“Mark’s a business guy and he knows it’s the private sector that creates jobs, not the government,” said McDonnell.

Dudenhefer, Republican and Chairman of the Stafford County Board of Supervisors, was absent from the event held in his honor at the Globe and Laurel Restaurant due to a family situation. His wife, Kaye, was on hand to greet supporters.

“He will serve you very well, and he remains very committed to going to Richmond and continuing his work there,” she said.

A win for McDonnell would increase the Republican majority in the House of Delegates lending more support of Republican Speaker William Howell (R-Stafford).

Dudenhefer is vying for the newly shifted 2nd House seat that was moved to the Potomac Communities from southwest Virginia as part of the decennial redistricting process.

While much of the district lies in North Stafford, some of its most populous precincts are in eastern Prince William – the same areas that had heavy turnouts for Democrats in 2009 while the majority of the state voted Republican.

Esteban Garces, who has stated his desire via his website to run against Dudenhefter, has yet to hold a public event. The Democrat in a Twitter message on Monday said he would hold a public kick off at 7 p.m. Monday at the LaLuna Restaurant on U.S. 1 in Woodbridge.
