Update
Officials say five people were seriously injured this morning at Stafford’s Dogwood Airport.
The victims were standing on a 50×60 foot airplane hangar that was under construction when the roof truss collapsed, sending all four plummeting to the ground, said Stafford fire and rescue spokesman Mark Doyle.
Four patients suffered critical injuries while the fifth suffered injuries that did not appear to be life threatening.
All five victims were taken to area hospitals.
Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have been called to investigate.
Stafford County, Va. –– At least three people were injured this morning at Stafford’s Dogwood Airport when a truss at a construction site collapsed.
According to initial reports, at least one person has suffered serious injuries in the fall, and a helicopter was ordered to fly one patient to an area trauma center, but the helicopter order was cancelled in favor of taking the victim directly to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg.
Officials made the call to cancel the helicopter after it was determined rescue crews could get the patent to the Fredericksburg hospital sooner, according to initial reports.
The small private airstrip sits in a wooded area off U.S. 1 in Stafford County, just south of the larger Stafford Regional Airport.
We’ll have more on this as it becomes available.
