Stafford County, Va. –– The Aquia Creek Battlefield is about to undergo a major survey. Now, anyone interested in the site of one of the first major naval battles of the Civil War is invited to get more information about the project.
Stafford County officials will hold a meeting from 7 to 8 p.m. March 23 in the Board Chambers at the county administration center on U.S. 1 to provide an overview of the project, what tools and methodologies will be used in the study, the size and scope of the area to be studied and to share how archeologists will map the underwater portions of the battlefield, said Stafford spokeswoman Cathy Riddle.
Following the presentation, there will be a question and answer session for those in the audience.
Those who live nearby the battlefield are encouraged to share information, photos and any maps that may help archeologists in their mapping of the area, said Riddle.
The area to be studied lies at the mouth of the Aquia Creek at the Potomac River.
Officials say the study will better provide them with an idea of how to preserve the battlefield for future generations.
The survey is scheduled to begin later this year, and comes the same year as the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War.
