Bill targets those who don’t stop for school buses

Woodbridge, Va. — A bill now on its way through the Virginia Senate aims to slap drivers who don’t stop at school buses.

Del. Richard Anderson (R-51, Lake Ridge, Woodbridge) sponsored the bill, which states all drivers could be charged with reckless driving if they do not stop for school buses that are picking up and dropping off students.

The bill changes the wording to an older law that states drivers must stop “at” school buses to drivers must stop “at any school bus.”

The legislation comes after officials in Fairfax County have noted an increase of drivers who have failed to stop for school buses.

In a statement earlier this week, they reminded drivers that not stopping for school buses already brings with it reckless driving charges, possible fines and jail time.
