Approximately 42.5 million Americans are planning to travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving holiday, with most of them planning to put rubber to the road.

Once again this year the automobile will carry 90 percent of holiday travelers to grandma’s house as an expected 38.2 million people expected to hit the roads this week, a four percent increase over last year.


Planning to use Metro to get from Springfield to Washington this weekend? Part of your commute will be by bus.

The transit agency will close Metro’s Blue and Yellow lines from 10 p.m. Friday to closing on Sunday for major work on the rail line, between the King Street and Pentagon City stations. Additionally, National Airport, Crystal City and Braddock Road stations will be closed during the work.


The results of a new rider survey show since Keolis Rail Services America took over the operation of VRE trains from Amtrak last year, riders are happy that on-time performance has improved, reports the Washington Examiner. But they add the new operators are less knowledgeable and less courteous than their Amtrak counterparts.

The survey results come after the commuter railroad announced their highest-ever on time performance record.


Virginia Railway Express had its best on time month ever in October.

VRE trains ran on time 98 percent of the time last month, a first for the 19-year-old transit agency. Officials credit new locomotives and railcars for the on time improvements, as well as changes to the operations at VRE’s host railroads – CSX Corp. and Norfolk Southern.


Woodbridge, Va. –– Local bus riders this month will have two new ways to pay for their travel and to transfer to buses in Prince William County.

Beginning Nov. 14, the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission will introduce its Electronic Weekly Pass – a SmarTrip rechargeable fare card that for $11 per week can be used to purchase unlimited rides on OmniLink and Cross-County Connector buses in Prince William, Manassas and Manassas Park. Riders will also be able to purchase a day pass for unlimited local travel on these buses for $2.50 per day.


Woodbridge, Va. — Get ready for more delays on Interstate 95 north as crews prepare to finish what they started earlier this week.

Construction crews tonight through Saturday morning will attempt to repair a 25-foot section of concrete at Prince William Parkway, and drivers are being told to pack their patience if they plan to be on that stretch of the highway during the repairs.


Woodbridge, Va. — Those who park illegally at the Horner Road Commuter Lot will be the new focus of state police next week.

Starting tomorrow, Virginia State Police will erect electronic message signs at the Woodbridge commuter lot at Prince William Parkway and Interstate 95 – which is the largest commuter lot in the state, accommodating more than 2,000 vehicles – warning drivers of an upcoming enforcement beginning Monday, Oct. 17.


Lorton, Va. — A popular commuter cut-through route in Lorton has been reopened after floods washed out a bridge last month.

Lorton Road, between Va. 123 and Interstate 95, reopened over the weekend after Virginia Department of Transportation crews put the finishing touches on a new bridge over Giles Run. A portion of the old bridge was washed away and the road approaching the bridge was severely damaged in September after flood waters from the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee pummeled the region.
