Route 1 northbound in Stafford County will be reduced to a single lane for emergency bridge repairs at Accokeek Creek starting around 9 p.m. tonight.

Crews will repair a bridge rail and section of guardrail damaged on Sunday, Oct. 6, when a tractor-trailer struck the bridge. The bridge over Accokeek Creek is located between the intersections with Route 628 (American Legion Road/Eskimo Hill Road) and South Campus Boulevard. The crash damaged around 41 feet of bridge rail, including six posts, and around 220 feet of guardrail.

A tractor-trailer crash closed both directions of Route 1 in Stafford County for six hours on Sunday, October 6, 2024. The crash occurred at around 4:26 p.m. near the intersection of South Campus Boulevard near Stafford Hospital, according to Darragh Frye with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

The tractor-trailer was hauling plywood, struck a bridge carrying Route 1 traffic over the Accokeek Creek, and damaged guardrails. As VDOT crews assisted with traffic control, both northbound and southbound lanes of Route 1 were reduced to a single lane. All lanes reopened around 11:40 p.m.


Fredericksburg

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is inviting residents of the Fredericksburg region to participate in a public hearing on a proposed project to modify the intersection at Route 1 and Augustine Avenue, near Allman’s BBQ. The project aims to improve traffic flow and safety at several key intersections along Route 1, including Stafford Avenue, College Avenue, and Eagle Village Drive.

The project is being funded through Virginia’s SMART SCALE state transportation program. The application for this project was submitted by the City of Fredericksburg.

Starting Sunday, July 28, drivers on Route 3 westbound in Fredericksburg will experience brief overnight delays and a temporary rough ride as crews begin resurfacing the road and updating lane markings. The work will stretch from Gateway Boulevard to Woodlyn Drive and is expected to take about two weeks.

Stafford County’s Planning Commission will hold its next meeting on July 24. On the agenda is a new telecom tower off the Interstate 95 (I-95) exit 143A ramp.

The 23-acre lot is currently not zoned. VDOT owns the vacant buffer zone between Route 1 and I-95. Nearby land is zoned B-2 (Neighborhood Business) and contains a business park and mixed commercial properties.

Route 636 (Hood Drive) in Spotsylvania County will reopen to two-way traffic on the morning of Friday, July 19. The reopening will allow southbound traffic to travel from Route 208 (Courthouse Road) to Route 1. Westbound Courthouse Road traffic can turn left onto southbound Hood Drive or make a U-turn to eastbound Courthouse Road.

Hood Drive had been limited to northbound traffic only since July 2023 for construction. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) says two road improvement projects are nearly complete, with full completion expected by August 2024. The projects involved adding new turn lanes, a raised median, sidewalks, and pedestrian crossing equipment. Hood Drive sees about 11,000 vehicles daily.

Construction to install a modular roundabout at the intersection of Banks Ford and Celebrate Virginia parkways in Stafford County will begin Monday, July 22. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will start with paving, followed by assembling and installing modular roundabout pieces made from 136,090 pounds of recycled plastic. Starting Aug. 5, the intersection will temporarily become a four-way stop for about two weeks. The project aims to enhance safety and reduce vehicle collisions. The $700,000 project, funded by Stafford County, is expected to be completed by late Aug. 2024.

VDOT: Construction to install a modular roundabout at the intersection of Route 1969 (Banks Ford Parkway) and Route 1968 (Celebrate Virginia Parkway) in Stafford County will begin on Monday, July 22.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will host an open meeting to discuss plans for Route 17 Business and Olde Forge Drive. The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the VDOT Fredericksburg District Auditorium at 86 Deacon Road. An inclement weather date is set for Aug. 13.

This project goal is to reduce congestion by improving Route 17 Business (Warrenton Road) at the intersections of Olde Forge Drive (Route 1580) and RV Parkway (Route 698).

The Falmouth Bridge, a critical connection between Fredericksburg and Stafford County over the Rappahannock River, is set for a major rehabilitation project. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has secured $86.2 million in funding for this endeavor. Construction is slated to begin in fiscal year 2029, with activities expected from summer 2028 through summer 2029, VDOT spokeswoman Kelly Hannon said.
