Marching in the Dale City Independence Day Parade this year with my son’s Cub Scout pack, I actually paid attention.
I’ve marched in the parade several times in my life as a cheerleader with Dale City Sports Club, as a political supporter, and even on a church float –– but this year was different. This year we were marching with a flag displayed.

Manassas, Va. –– Starting tonight at the Hylton Performing Arts Center, a series of new special performances begins with an old favorite.
We are in the midst of some fundamental changes in how this nation fights its wars. Some of these changes are the result of our efforts. Others are the result of our adversaries’ endeavors. For us, both Iraq and Afghanistan have been true “crucibles of invention” as our tactics, techniques and procedures have evolved to meet the demands of the changing battlefield situation. But we’re not the only ones who are learning the lessons of those wars.
China’s People’s Liberation Army is among those paying very close attention to our recent combat experiences. It turns out the Chinese have been very impressed with our ability to use Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to effectively track, target and kill insurgents in both theaters. A July 4 article in the Washington Post describes how the Chinese are producing drones that are similar to our Predator and Global Hawk UAVs and showcasing them at the Zhuhai air show, the top such event in their country.
I wasn’t jealous that she was on a motorcycle, I was more fascinated by the fact that her dog fit so nicely on the seat without falling out.
My beloved dog, Sophi, is a bit large for a Labrador and is still in the puppy stage, so let’s just say that would not work for her.

I don’t claim to be an education expert, however, I feel fairly confident that if your children are spending their summer forgetting everything their teachers managed to cram in into their heads this past school year their brains are going to leech out of their ears in a very SpongeBob-esque fashion.
That doesn’t mean that you need to magically craft an engaging and age-appropriate curriculum out of thin air. There are great programs and incentives in place that you can use to keep childrens’ brains in tip-top shape for fall.

As we approach the 4th of July weekend it seems appropriate to reflect on the vital role this area played in the creation of our nation. Not only was it the home to several key Revolutionary leaders, it also provided the backdrop to one of the greatest logistical feats of the American Revolutionary War.
Two hundred and thirty years have passed since the American Revolutionaries and their French allies embarked on a “long march” that would turn the tide of war and set the stage for our true independence from Great Britain. It was during the latter part of June 1781 that General George Washington and his French counterpart, the Comte de Rochambeau, began an incredible march that would end at Yorktown, the scene of what proved to be the decisive battle of the Revolution.
For weeks I have declined to mow over a small volunteer petunia growing beside my driveway. You see, I don’t have the best of luck growing things that I have planted so when a petunia sprouted up on its own I didn’t have the heart to mow it down while trimming the rest of the lawn.
Would you mow over a petunia for the sake of a perfectly manicured lawn or let it grow?
The President’s draw down from Afghanistan may mark the beginning of the end of our almost ten year involvement in that country.
The thousands of American and allied Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines who have served in that “graveyard of empires” have helped make our world more secure by disrupting the havens of al Qaeda terrorists and taking down the regime of their Taliban hosts. Although these successes may be temporary, they were achieved in a very inhospitable environment.
