Stafford, Va — Old Man Winter paid a visit to the Potomac Communities overnight bringing with him a dusting of snow and a light coating of ice.
Temperatures just before 9 a.m. Saturday were still hovering around the freezing mark, but transportation officials said roads in the area are mostly clear.
Kevin English was always good for a news tip. After he found PotomacLocal.com, he would send me story ideas that would often have to do with Dumfries. In some cases he probably knew more about what was happening inside of Town Hall than some who actually work there. It shouldn’t come as a surprise because he served on the Town Council and ran for mayor.
English passed away Sunday at age 57, and all this week has been remembered as someone who cared deeply about his community. I always appreciated his willingness to reach out and to be open and honest about what he thought.

It’s going to be a cold one, but luckily this weekend will also be great for local indoor events.
The NV Players will continue their presentation of “Aladdin”. While the show is being performed in Burke, many of the actors are from Prince William County. “Annie” will take the stage at Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge with showtimes this weekend and next, and you can also catch “Miss Electricity” at the Lorton Workhouse’s theatre for young audiences through February 25.

No more country for old buffets
Buffets Inc. said Wednesday it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and plans to close 81 restaurants nationwide. It operates under a variety of names, including Old Country Buffet. Washington-area locations include Fairfax County, Alexandria, Waldorf, Gaithersburg and Laurel, reports the Washington Business Journal.

Virginia GOP wants party registration
Virginia Republicans dropped their plans to have voters sign loyalty oaths before they are allowed to cast ballots in the March 6 primary, but now the party wants to overturn a century-old practice and start requiring voters to register by political party, reports the Washington Examiner.
“We’re well on our way to a million customers signing up for the most convenient and cheapest way to receive decal and license renewal alerts,” said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb. “We applaud these Virginians for helping to save the Commonwealth money and resources.”
The 750,000 customers who are no longer receiving paper reminders via U.S. mail will save the state $442,000. Each piece of U.S. mail not processed by DMV saves 59 cents in printing, processing and postage fees.
