PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — When a barrel containing chemicals exploded at the landfill, fears arose that a new high school being built next door may be too close for comfort.

That barrel exploded July 30 after someone dropped it off at a chemical depot at the Prince William County Sanitary Landfill at 14811 Dumfries Road at Independent Hill. The incident prompted a response from police, fire and rescue crews, and calls from the FBI. After being shut down, the landfill reopened for regular business about two hours after the explosion.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. – On August 17, a female suspect told police that while she was meeting a male suspect to purchase marijuana, the male suspect robbed her with a handgun. According to the report, police discovered that the female suspect was lying about the robbery because after giving him the money, the male suspect didn’t give her marijuana; both were arrested.

MANASSAS, Va. –– The death of a 26-year-old man found stabbed to death in a dumpster appears to be gang related.

Two suspects are in custody and four more are wanted in connection to the death of Cesar Benjamin Contreras, of Manassas. Contreras’ body was found inside a dumpster in at the Colonial Village Apartments near Old Town Manassas about 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

MANASSAS, Va. — The wife of the late Manassas City Mayor and former Virginia Delegate Harry J. Parrish, and mother of the city’s current Mayor Harry “Hal” Parrish has died.

Mattie Parrish passed away last night. She was 93 years old and was described as a “pillar of the community” in a press release from the mayor’s office.

 Some Prince William residents have expressed concern over a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) memo requiring that unaccompanied alien children be enrolled in school even without receiving immunization.

Written on July 25, and disseminated to all Virginia public school divisions, the memo states that children without citizenship, living on their own or with others in the community are considered homeless students if they have no fixed address or are staying in a temporary placement.

STAFFORD, Va. — The shovels are ready and Stafford County leaders have been summoned to toss dirt to herald the construction of a new $12 million indoor / outdoor recreation center.

The 76,000-square foot center will be located at the county’s new Embrey Mill Park, located in the new housing development of the same name just off Mine Road.
