The recession may be officially over, but the homeless problem in Northern Virginia persists.
Officials at the Franconia District Police Station in Fairfax want more neighborhood feedback.
They’re looking for more residents to become part of the station’s Community Advisory Committee, where they can share concerns about their community with police and increase communications between residents and the police department, said station spokesman Richard Henry.
Potomac Rappahannock Transportation Commission’s OmniRide and OmniLink buses will be participating this week as part of Virginia’s third annual Try Transit Week.
Between now and Sept. 24, if you pledge to use transit your name will be put into a drawing for a pair of tickets for use on Amtrak Virginia, which provides service from the state to the Northeast U.S, according to the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation. (more…)

According to the National Weather Service, the high tides along the Potomac River in Alexandria today will be at 1:14 p.m. and Aquia Creek in Stafford County at 11:28 a.m.
The rain will produce tides about 1 foot above normal and could cause minor coastal flooding in some areas, according to the weather service.

Finding something fun to do in the summer of 1983 was not easy. Our options were limited. The highlight at that time was the Dale City Skating Rink on Smoketown Road. For the most part, we were left to our own survival skills and imagination to occupy our days.
It was during this time that we were introduced to McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets. One afternoon my best friend Tracey and I walked seven miles to the only McDonalds in the area to get a 20 piece order of McNuggets. The joy was in the journey.
