Ah, Summer! It’s time for flip-flops, popsicles, lazy days at the pool, and a break from school. It’s also time for Summer reading at your public library! We’re talking prizes for reading, fun weekly challenges and tons of events and activities all Summer long. And it’s all free, of course!

Before we get into the details, let’s talk about why Summer reading is so important to school-age students. Maybe you’ve heard of the “Summer slide”? It’s the learning loss that happens during the summer when kids and teens don’t read or participate in educational activities. But don’t worry, because public library Summer reading programs help combat Summer slide. Research shows that children who are engaged in Summer reading programs perform better academically when they return to school in the Fall. Prince William County must have 340 school buses retrofitted.

The brake interlock system was missing from these buses sold to the school division after March 24, 2011. The interlock stops accidental engagement of the bus’ transmission by requiring the driver to step on the brake before releasing the bus’ parking brake.

Good morning Prince William – you don’t want to miss the 3rd Annual Cajun Occasion Crawfish Boil on Saturday, June 10th, noon- 4 pm on the Manassas Museum Lawn. This fun event includes all you can eat Louisiana Buffet, live music featuring Kitty and the Fat Cats and beer and wine garden with Louisiana beers available on tap. Bring your blankets, chairs, pop-up tents and set up on the lawn. Proceeds from the beer and wine garden benefit the Un Trim A Tree Holiday Gift program for over 5,000 needy kids in our community. Please visit www.habitatpwc.org and schedule yourself on their Volunteer Calendar – slots are open for more volunteers June 1 through June 3! The Heritage Railway Festival is back in Manassas for its 23rd year! Enjoy the rich railroad history of Manassas Saturday, June 3rd from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. surrounding the Train Depot.

A day full of family-friendly fun, the Heritage Railway Festival will feature a community stage on West Street hosting the Bull Run Cloggers, Wildlife Ambassadors, Premier Martial Arts, and the Suburban Gypsies Belly Dance Club.

From Prince William police: 

“Attempted Abduction | Malicious Wounding *ARREST– On May 20, detectives from the Special Victims Unit were able to identify the suspect involved in the attempted abduction and assault which occurred in the area of Castile Court and Oakwood Drive in Woodbridge.  Following the investigation, detectives located and arrested the suspect, identified as Keith Richard GRIFFIN, later that afternoon.  A search warrant was subsequently executed at this residence.
