Ft. Belvoir –– The credit union is once again open for business at Fort Belvoir Elementary School.
Belvoir Federal Credit Union reopened its student-run branch at the elementary school on the Army base, as it does every October, to provide students, faculty and staff the convenience of having a credit union on campus.

Fairfax County, Va. –– A large stretch of U.S. 1 near Ft. Belvoir now being repaved should be finished by early next month, officials said.
The 8-mile, $3.3 million project will see the re-pavement of the road surface between Mount Eagle Drive and Backlick Road in south Fairfax County comes as more than 20,000 jobs are expected to relocate to Ft. Belvoir by September 2011.
Work to repave the road began in early August, and it’s expected to be finished by the first week of August, said Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jennifer McCord. Read More
There will be no OktoberFest at Ft. Belvoir tonight.
That’s the latest word from officials at the Army Base, who say today’s heavy rains forced the cancellation of the event.
All is not lost, however, as tonight’s keg tapping event will go on as scheduled at 6 p.m., and will be held in the Wells Field House on base, said Ft. Belvoir spokesman Donald Carr.
Crews are said to be working “nonstop” to ready the grounds for tomorrow’s scheduled 6 p.m. opening of Ft. Belvoir’s OktoberFest.
Woodbridge, Va. – Belvoir Federal Credit Union will end its partnership with three Woodbridge area schools.
Branches of the credit union had been set up at Gar-Field and Woodbridge high schools, and Godwin and Woodbridge middle schools, under a partnership between the credit union and Prince William public schools. Read More
After spending 19 years in the Army so far, Master Sgt. Bill Martin has secured his family a newly renovated home near Ft. Belvoir.
Their neighborhood, Woodlawn Village, is well-known among service men and women who work on and around Army base.
The homes, which sit off U.S. 1 and are not considered to be on base, were built 30-years ago as two, three and four-bedroom duplexes.
Now they’re getting a facelift, as the duplexes are being expanded, some to full-size homes with up to five bedrooms, large two-car garages, larger living spaces, bigger backyards, all which are being built around a new community center.

MOUNT VERNON, Va. – Traffic congestion may force some of the 20,000 federal employees that are expected in the region next year because of BRAC to stay away. One local business group aims to convince them otherwise.
BRAC, the military’s acronym for base realignment and closure, authorized in 2005 by congress, will force the relocation of the tens of thousands of federal and military employees to Ft. Belvoir Army Base and Quantico Marine Corps Base.

More soldiers serving abroad will be able to speak with their families thanks to the generosity of area residents.
During the past six months, Belvoir Credit Union collected 322 cell phones at their more than 10 branches. And with each cell phone donation, the credit union has donated one dollar to the Cell Phones for Soldiers charity.
The charity turns the donated phones into calling cards that are sent to soldiers, said Belvoir Credit Union spokeswoman Amy Shanks.
Since two Massachusetts teenagers formed the charity in 2008, Cell Phones for Soldiers has been working to collect 50,000 old cell phones per month at more than 3,000 collection sites, according to the charity’s Web site.
You can donate your old cell phones at Belvoir’s Woodbridge location, at 14040 Central Loop, just off Prince William Parkway.
