U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman 1st Class (senior) Alex Romano, 22, of Dumfries, Virginia, was recently named a 2023 Knight-Hennessy Scholar. The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program provides full funding for students to pursue a graduate degree at Stanford University.

Romano is one of 85 scholars selected for the program’s sixth cohort of students. More than 7,000 candidates competed for one of the 85 scholarships awarded. He intends to pursue a master’s degree in aeronautics and astronautics at Stanford School of Engineering.

OmniRide is the operating name for the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission (PRTC) ‘s mobility services. In 2018, OmniRide had more than 150 buses in its fleet and made more than 2.5 million passenger trips.

The National Bike to Work Day is being organized at the regional level by the Commuter Connections Committee of the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments (MWCOG) and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA).

Work is underway at Potomac Shores to build a new four-level, 400-space parking garage.

During a groundbreaking event Monday, May 8, 2023, a spokesman for Potomac Shores developer Biddle Real Estate Ventures said the garage will open in Fall 2024, with the train station construction occurring at the time of opening or beginning shortly after that. The structure will be a precursor to a new Virginia Railway Express station to be built next to the garage.

Prince Wiliam County Woodbridge District Supervisor Margaret Franklin announced 13 new bus shelters would be erected on Route 1 bus shelters in Woodbridge, between Occoquan Road and Wayside Drive near Dumfries.

Arson, Attempted Murder*Arrest – On April 16, Fire Marshals charged a suspect in connection to the townhouse fire that occurred in the 3600 block of Dalhgreen Place (Dumfries) on November 26, 2022. The suspect is the stepbrother of the occupant who rented the basement portion of the home.

At the time of the fire, two (2) other occupants were upstairs in the home. Evidence from the scene and the suspect’s actions ultimately led to his identity in the incident. Following the investigation, Fire Marshals obtained arrest warrants for the suspect, identified as Nathanial Earl Payne, in connection with the incident. On April 18, the suspect was located and arrested without incident in Fairfax County by the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
