DUMFRIES, Va. — A judge dropped eight of 23 charges against a former police officer and current Dumfries ice cream shop owner accused of sexually abusing a minor. The accused then took to Facebook to rally support and to admit his addiction to sleeping pills.

Joseph Ruhren, 41, was arrested in March when a 27-year-old Fredericksburg man told police and the FBI that he was sexually assaulted when he was a child between the ages of 12 and 16-years-old. Police said the assaults took place between 1996 and 2001.

DUMFRIES, Va. – Though no longer on the council, they’ve not been forgotten.

Former Interim Mayor Nancy West and Former Councilwoman Dorothea Barr were both recognized by Dumfries Mayor Gerald Foreman on Tuesday night. Both women stepped down from the Dumfries Town Council after losing their bids for re-election in May.

Ceremony Will Recognize Public Safety Promotions

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — The Prince William County Fire and Rescue Department on Thursday night will recognize 23 uniform members recently promoted to the ranks of Technician II, Lieutenant, Captain and Battalion Chief. Telecommunicators from the Office of Public Safety Communications will also be acknowledged for recent promotion.

A public ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. at Forest Park High School near Dumfries. Retired Battalion Chief Hadden Culp will lead the ceremony and a reception will follow.

DUMFIRES, Va. — The second week of the Dumfries Farmers Market was marked Saturday. The growing event has brought together town residents, produce farmers, and other food vendors.

The market began Saturday July 14 and will be held every Saturday through Oct. 27 at the Town Hall parking lot. No market will be held Saturday Sept. 8 because of the town’s planned Fall Festival.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — A series of grants was awarded this month by the Potomac Health Foundation, ~~based out of Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center~~, to local non-profit agencies in the Potomac Communities. More from the foundation’s press release:

The all-volunteer Board of Directors of Potomac Health Foundation approved grants to 17 not-for-profit agencies. This is only the second set of grants the foundation has awarded since its founding in December 2009. The total dollars awarded was $3,720,427 to support 21 health related projects.

Crime Watch: Rape of Girl, 14, Investigated

Rape / Indecent Liberties – On July 19, detectives from the Special Victims Unit concluded an investigation into a sexual assault which was reported to have occurred in the 1300 block of Oregon Ave in Woodbridge (22191). The investigation revealed that victim, currently a 14 year old female, was raped by the accused, a known acquaintance, in March of 2010. Recently, in June of 2012, the accused sent the victim sexually explicit text messages. Following an investigation, the accused was subsequently arrested.
