DUMFIRES, Va. — What officials want: Dumfries’ $4.4 million budget reduced by as much as four cents. While that may not sound like much, it amounts up to a $60,000 cut in town services.
At Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting, leaders tasked Town Manager Daniel Taber coming up with a way to fund the town’s needs, implement tax cuts, and take into consideration council members’ individual wants for the coming fiscal year. He’s to report back to them with a balanced budget in two weeks, detailing what services he intends to cut to make it all work.

DUMFIRES, Va. — Jennifer Stringfellow likes Dumfries and its older houses. She ought to, as she is the head of the town’s Architectural Review Board (ARB), a volunteer commission charged with overseeing development, changes, and preserving the town’s historic district that includes an old street grid, something that resembles Old Town Alexandria’s layout.
The small town, Virginia’s oldest continuously charted town of 5,000 residents, wasn’t always known for its busy U.S. 1. When it was founded in 1749 it was one of the nation’s largest deep water ports, and water flowed right up to present day Main Street and the street grid. Many of the old homes and buildings are no longer there, but the Weems-Botts House, Williams Ordinary, the Anderson House that sits about a block away from the Weems-Botts House, Town Hall, and homes that are more than 50-years-old are all in the district.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. — Dorothy Hughes is no stranger to April Fool’s jokes. That probably explains why, when she realized she’d won $500,000 in the Virginia Lottery’s Millionaire Mania game, her initial reaction was, “This is not an April Fool’s joke!”
The Dumfries woman bought her winning ticket at Cherry Hill Shell, 3186 River Heritage Blvd. in Dumfries. The store received a $10,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
